About the back page:
This spring, Grade 3 and 4 students at FISW began an exploration of Modernist artists by visiting the Wiesbaden Museum, famous for their collection of artwork by Alexej von Jawlensky. They learned about his Expressionistic style of using bold color combinations and complements to make artworks that were radical at the time. Back in the art room, students explored these color-mixing techniques with oil pastels and watercolors, focusing on a popular theme of Jawlensky’s – portraits. The particular portrait here is of a dragon and the artist used the complementary colors of red and green to make it boldly stand out, before surrounding it with bright splotches of color.
