(IBO), and other leading educational institutions and agencies around the world to inform FIS’s position on the matter. Upper School English teacher Ms. Louise Wade and Upper School Librarian Ms. Manatsu McCluskey – leaders of the Ethics and Guidance sub-group – have been deeply engaged in weaving technology usage principles to support the implementation of AI at FIS into existing guidelines. The main goal of this work is to help students and teachers better understand the potentials, boundaries and limitations of utilizing these instruments in an educational environment while continuing to foster critical thinking, originality and creativity.
Students have been involved in this learning process and regularly participate in the task force’s brainstorming sessions and discussions. By collecting information via surveys, student representatives are able to share with other senior team members what students at FIS are experiencing and wondering, what their opinions and wishes are regarding how they use generative AI, and what they wish to see in the future. Student voice has been a key factor in supporting the next steps in establishing support for learners and leveling the playing field for all.
“FIS’s journey toward AI integration
is proving to be strategically planned, a collaborative effort, and has a strongly shared vision for the future of education.”
— Scott Knauss, FIS parent
Ms. Jessica Russo-Scherr, Upper School Visual Arts Teacher and Theory of Knowledge Coordinator, who spearheaded the 2023 AI Symposium, has been a guiding force in supporting student-led AI related activities. To ensure students had some foundational protocols to follow when using AI for projects, research or any other academic activities, she designed, together with her sub-group members, a traffic-light system that students can refer to when in doubt about anything AI.
Moreover, community engagement plays a pivotal role in FIS's AI integration efforts. Parents, students and faculty members are actively involved in providing feedback and insights, shaping the direction of AI integration, and ensuring that it meets the diverse needs and expectations of the school community.
Speaking about the progress made, Mr. Scott Knauss, FISO parent and Cybersecurity expert, highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative. "FIS’s journey toward AI integration is proving to be strategically planned, a collaborative effort, and has a strongly shared vision for the future of education,” he said. “By leveraging the power of AI, the school is aiming to empower students to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, which places them ahead of the game."
Looking ahead, FIS remains committed to pushing the boundaries of AI integration in education, continuing to explore innovative approaches and solutions to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. The process of integration and creating guidelines is a work in progress that the task force, together with all stakeholders, will strive to update as new technologies are introduced.
With its pioneering initiatives and forward- thinking approach, FIS is poised to shape the future of education in the age of AI, one innovative step at a time.
